Use Aside on multiple devices
What Aside syncs between your computers, what stays on each device, and how to move to a new computer.
Signing in with the same account on two computers connects them to the same Aside account, but it does not copy everything between them. Use this page to see what travels with your account and what stays on each computer.
What syncs between devices
| Data | Sync | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs, tab groups, pinned tabs | Browser sync, on when you are signed in | Settings > Account > Devices |
| Aside Vault passwords | Vault sync, on when Password Manager is signed in | Settings > Passwords |
| Memory, your custom skills, projects created in Aside, routines | Experimental Sync, off by default | Settings > Experimental |
Browser sync is encrypted with a sync key that Aside keeps for your account. If New Tab shows Browser sync needs attention, see Browser sync needs attention.
What stays on each device
These live in the Aside folder on each computer (~/.aside on macOS, %USERPROFILE%\.aside on Windows) and do not sync:
- Chats and task history
- Routine runs and their outputs
- Working folders that tasks created or that you attached
- Settings, including agent permissions and model choices
- Context Awareness history (
Settings > Memory) - Website sign-in sessions. Sign in to each site again on the other computer, or let Aside Vault fill the credentials.
A task you started on one computer keeps running there. Opening Aside on another computer shows that computer's own chats, not the first one's.
Experimental Sync
Settings > Experimental > Sync syncs agent files, projects, routines, and browser cookies for cloud sessions across devices. It covers:
- Memory, except Context Awareness history
- Your custom skills and agent instruction files (
AGENTS.md,SOUL.md) - Projects created in Aside, with their instruction and memory files but not their other files
- Routines. A routine still runs on the computer it was created on.
It does not sync chats, task outputs, other project files, or settings. Experimental features can change or break, so keep a backup before you turn it on, and expect conflicts if you edit memory on two computers at the same time.
Cloud handoff
Cloud handoff appears on the pricing page as Coming Soon. There is no supported way yet to move a running task, its chats, memory, or working folder to another computer or to the cloud, and a paid plan does not keep local tasks running after the computer sleeps or shuts down. Channels such as Telegram control the computer Aside is running on, so that computer must stay on and online.
Move to a new computer
Aside does not have a backup and restore feature for chats and task history yet, and copying the Aside folder to another computer is not supported. Parts of it are encrypted with keys tied to the computer's security hardware, so a copied folder does not open on new hardware.
What carries over on its own when you sign in on the new computer is the synced data in the table above. Before you retire the old computer, turn on experimental Sync there if you want memory, skills, and routines to follow you, and keep a copy of the Aside folder (~/.aside or %USERPROFILE%\.aside) from the old computer, taken while Aside is quit, in case a restore option is added later.
